Tunisia – break for the border

The day we arrived in Tunisia an unemployed man set himself alight in protest against the lack of opportunities in the country. A few days after we arrived, we were at a desert festival in the southern town of Douz where the President, Ben Ali, made an impressive appearance. Little did we know that less than 3 weeks later, he (and us) would be making a swift exit from the country as events snowballed into mass popular protest against the regime. He probably didn’t either.

Tunisia – first impressions

Tunisia After an inauspicious arrival on a cold, wet, windy night at the La Goulette Port in Tunis, we headed south in search of warmth. But not before half a day spent in Tunis applying for our transit visas for Libya – a process that requires a visit to the Libyan Embassy, the British Embassy, and an Arabic translator – repeat steps until visa arrives. This gave us a good unguided tour of the city – for the most part modern, and growing rapidly in every direction, but without the frenzy that typically accompanies it.

And we’re off!

UK, France, Italy. A mad scramble to leave, but finally we’re off! We managed to escape in between the two rounds of heavy snowfall and had a clear run through Europe. When we say ‘clear run’, do remember that with a top speed of 60 mph, it feels more like a ‘clear amble’. Getting to Africa could take some time.
